Collections and Collecting

The John Preston Davis Collections contains items in manuscript and archival collections. Among these holdings is a wealth of material concerning African-American history and culture. The Davis Collections safeguards letters, diaries, ledgers, photographs, films, and rare books documenting some three centuries of African-American experience. The collection is especially strong regardiing African-American life in the post-World War II civil rights era.

Guides to the Collections
One of our guides features selected collections that were either generated by African Americans or that contain materials directly documenting 20th-century African-American experiences.

Another guide lists collections pertaining to the African-American experience during the slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and post-World War II eras.

Recent Acquistions
The Davis Collection is engaged in an ongoing process of collecting African and African-American studies materials for the Rare, Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library.
